Objectives of the degree
The Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering will allow you to acquire specific skills established by Order CIN/311/2009, on the 9th of February 2009, according to the responsibilities of an industrial engineer, as an officially recognized profession in Spain.
The aim of the Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering is to train professionals and researchers according to the needs of society, and with respect to the field of the industrial engineering, in observance of the laws and regulations of the profession.
You will be able to plan, calculate and design products, processes, installations, and plants, while also having the possibility to become involved in research, innovation, and development of products, processes, and methods. You will also be able to plan, manage and supervise, as you will become familiar with the legislation affecting industrial engineers and the responsibilities related to the profession, with respect to ethical behavior.
During the master's degree, you will have the option of doing an internship in a company or alternatively enroll in optional courses designed to help prepare you for doctoral studies. The master's thesis will provide you with the necessary professional skills to work in companies.
Skills to be acquired
As the Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering is an officially recognized degree, the majority of its skills are defined in the Ministerial Order CIN/311/2009, on February 9th, 2009.
Among your skills are planning, calculating, designing, research, innovation and developing products, processes, installations and industrial plants.
Strategic planning applied to construction and production systems, quality, environmental management, technical and financial management of projects and generally, as well as technical management functions.
The Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering will allow you to acquire specific skills in the following areas:
- Professionally: preparation of students to work as industrial engineers
- Management: handling technological companies in the industry
- Research: undertaking doctoral studies
Acceptance to Master's degree programs
Admissions requirements for the Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering at the Universitat Ramon Llull take into account the provisions of Order CIN/311/2009, on February 9. In section 4.2 of the annex of the order, the following requirements are established:
- Students will have access to the master's degree entitling them to work as an industrial engineer if they have previously acquired the competencies mentioned in section 3 of the Ministerial Order establishing the requirements for verification of officially recognized University qualifications entitling students to carry out the profession of industrial engineer, in agreement within the provisions of section 5 of aforementioned Ministerial Order.
- Students will have access to the master's degree if their academic qualification certifies that their course included a basic core module and an industrial branch module, even if this did not include a complete section on specific technology, and if 48 credits of those offered in all the blocks of said module of the qualification entitle students to work as industrial engineers, in accordance with the aforementioned Ministerial Order.
- Students who have any other bachelor's degree will also be allowed to undertake this master's degree but, in this case, additional specific academic modules considered necessary will be established.
The previous sections shall be understood, notwithstanding the provisions in article 17.2 and the fourth additional provision of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October.
What has been agreed in the conferences held by the directors of Industrial Engineering Technology and Industrial Engineering will also be taken into consideration. Section 2 of said agreement, which was sent to ANECA, states that the Industrial Engineering program (bachelor's degree and master's degree) must include:
- A minimum of 180 ECTS credits (between the bachelor's degree and master's degree) of compulsory basic core module subjects, compulsory subjects of the industrial branch and specific technologies defined in MO CIN/351/2009. The specific technology subjects will have to be part of at least three different blocks of specific technologies defined in the aforementioned MO, with a minimum of 6 credits per block.
- A minimum of 24 ECTS credits (between the bachelor's degree and the master's degree) have to correspond to compulsory subjects that certify the specific competencies of mathematics (including statistics), and a minimum of 12 ECTS credits need to correspond to compulsory subjects that certify the basic competencies of physics. The competencies mentioned refer to the ones included in the basic core module of Ministerial Order CIN/351/2009
- A minimum of 24 ECTS credits obtained in advanced level modules (between the bachelor's degree and the master's degree)
- A minimum of 24 ECTS credits adding up the final year project of the bachelor's degree and the master's thesis
The most common path to the Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering at the Universitat Ramon Llull is after having completed the bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering Technology. Students who have studied the bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering and meet the requirements of Ministerial Order CIN/351/2009 and the agreements of the conferences held by the directors of Industrial Engineering Technology and Industrial Engineering will also be able to enroll in the master's degree. Those students who have any other bachelor's degree will also have access to this master's degree but, in this case, additional specific academic modules will be established.
In the case of students who have not studied in Spain but in a member state of the EU or in other countries Spain has established international reciprocity agreements with, candidates who want to study at a Spanish University will need to meet the academic requirements established in their respective educational systems in order to have access to graduate level courses in their home country.
Students from foreign educational systems to which the previous option does not apply will need to validate their diploma obtained in their home country as equivalent to a Spanish ‘Bachillerato’ and need to pass the University entrance exams.
The Permanent Committee of the Academic Board, which examines each applicant and establishes the recognition of credits, will handle the admission of students from any national or foreign University system, that have studied at the undergraduate level within the EHEA framework.
In the case of students from EU member states, or from countries with which Spain has established international agreements, students are required to have a qualification enabling them to undertake graduate level University studies in their home country. Students from outside of the EU, or from countries that do not have an established agreement with Spain, must have passed the corresponding University entrance exam.
Students must have earned all the credits undertaken in order to obtain a master's degree.
During the academic year, students will normally have two opportunities to pass exams: in February and in June – for the first semester subjects – and in June and in September – for the second-semester subjects, or for subjects that last two consecutive semesters. In the event a student has not earned 36 ECTS within the first year, he or she will not be allowed to continue with the master's thesis.
If a student does not pass an exam on the second attempt, two additional opportunities will be allowed. In the event that the student still has not obtained a pass in the subject, they can apply to the Permanent Committee of the Academic Board for a final opportunity to take the exam, justifying their position. The Permanent Committee of the Academic Board will examine the student's case and may complement this information by consulting the master's coordinator. If a student does not obtain a pass after having been granted an extra opportunity to take the exam, they will have to abandon the master's program.
The Master's degree in Industrial Engineering will enable you to work in different industrial sectors in positions related to general management, technical management, planning, research, innovation, development, and production in industries, research centers, and technological centers. You will be able to work in:
- Company departments: finance, commerce, management control, marketing, trade-marketing, market research, information technology, international trade, sales, supply chain, quality, research development and innovation (RDI), human resources, etc.
- Management of functional areas: production, marketing, and business, human resources and finance
- Service sector: auditing firms, consultancy, project evaluation, financial markets, financial institutions, banking, recruiting, insurance, marketing, publicity, research institutes, distribution, tourism, health, etc.
- Industrial sector: food and drink industry, chemical industry, iron and steel industry, the pharmaceutical industry, automobile industry, paper industry, cement industry, publishing, cosmetics, textile industry, etc.
- Infrastructure sector: technology, transport, phone industry, energy, logistics, construction, etc.
- Research: undertaking degrees and doctoral level studies offered by IQS
- Public administration: at a regional, national or European level
- Academics: teaching or researching within a University
